BEACON FALLS — No one was injured when an SUV caught fire on Route 8 Wednesday evening, but the vehicle is a total loss.
Beacon Hose Co. No. 1 Fire Chief Brian DeGeorge said the department received a report of a vehicle fire on Route 8 North before Exit 23 at 5:52 p.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene, he said the rear of the SUV was on fire and the fire was spreading to the passenger area of the vehicle.
DeGeorge said firefighters extinguished the fire in about 5 to 10 minutes. The highway was closed for about 15 minutes while firefighters put out the fire and cleaned up the area, he said.
A woman was the only person in the SUV, DeGeorge said. Someone passing the SUV noticed the fire and informed the woman, who pulled over, he said. No one was injured, he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
