NAUGATUCK — A 69-year-old Naugatuck woman was killed and two other people were seriously injured in a two-car crash that shut down a portion of Route 63 Sunday.
Police said Carol Gironda was driving a Nissan Rogue at about 3:45 p.m. when the car crashed head-on with a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo driven by Joie Cascella, 40, of Waterbury near the intersection of Mill Street.
Paramedics pronounced Gironda dead at the scene, police said.
Cascella and 68-year-old Diana Truchsess of Naugatuck, who was a passenger in Gironda’s Nissan, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment, police said.
Police closed Route 63 between Porter Avenue and Allerton Farms Road until about 10 p.m. Sunday as they investigated at the scene. The cause and what occurred before the crash, including whether both vehicles were driving on Route 63 or one was turning out of Mill Street, are under investigation.
The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team is investigating the crash. Police asked anyone with information to contact Sgt. Matthew Savoy at 203-729-5221.
