Gridiron glory
In his first collegiate football game, former Woodland running back Sean McAllen led Worchester Polytechnic Institute to a 37-34 win over MIT carrying 29 times and rushing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. McAllen earned rookie of the week honors in the Liberty League.
Instant offense
Woodland junior Tom Smith made the most of his touches Sept. 9 with 10 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown and two receptions for 62 yards and two more touchdowns to lead the Hawks’ offensive in a 41-29 loss to Crosby.
Hat trick saves the day
Naugatuck junior Hailey Boulanger scored three goals as the Greyhounds rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to beat Torrington, 4-2, in the season-opener Sept. 9.
Set, spike, score
Naugatuck senior Kelly Murphy led the Greyhounds to a 3-0 win over Kennedy in the season-opener Sept. 9 with 13 service points and 11 assists.
Defense with a capital ‘D’
Naugatuck junior Hubert Lutzykowski came through when the Greyhounds needed him the most. With the game versus Derby Sept. 9 still hanging in the balance, the Naugy defense stepped up and closed the deal. Lutzykowski intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. On the next series, he caused a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by senior Cameron Litwinka.
