Naugatuck sophomore Spencer Maher took first place in the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle in the Greyhounds’ 90-78 win over Watertown on Tuesday.

Naugatuck junior Jean Lukau led the way Tuesday with 23 points as the ‘Hounds battled back from a 47-40 deficit to outscore Kennedy 19-4 in the final quarter and earn a 59-51 win.

Woodland senior Eliza Smith scored a team-high 13 points in the Hawk’s 63-33 loss to defending NVL champion St. Paul on Tuesday.

Speed in the pool

Naugatuck senior Brian Goggin won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly in the season-opening, 90-78 win over Watertown on Tuesday.

Setting the tone

Naugatuck senior Alyana Sosa scored a game-high 17 points in the Greyhounds’ 47-21 win over Kennedy on Tuesday.

Boys swimming

Naugatuck opened the season on Tuesday with a 90-82 win over Watertown. Brian Goggin (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Spencer Maher (200 IM, 500 freestyle) were double winners to lead the Greyhounds (1-0). The 200 medley relay squad of Alex Manasoiu, Zach Alves, Maher and Elliot Dupont raced to victory in 1:52.97. Dale Wakeley won the 100 freestyle, and Logan Martin won the diving competition with a score of 173.18. Naugy hosted Glastonbury on Thursday.

Indoor track

The Greyhounds competed in the Hillhouse Invitational this past weekend and are back at it on Saturday at the Hillhouse Winter Relays.

Word from the Woods

Boys swimming

Woodland beat Oxford, 94-76, to open the season Tuesday. Greg Aldrich (200 IM), Jeff Varesio (50 freestyle), Jake Stow (100 backstroke) and Riley Clark (diving) each took first place. The 200 medley relay team of Chase Chura, Aldrich, Stow and Varesio took first in 2:01.15. The 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Curtain, Joe Flaherty, Clark and Zach Arisian finished first in 1:51.23. The Hawks (1-0) hosted Northwestern on Thursday.
